ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS and MATERIAL THEY WILL PRESENT:
ISSAM was born in Syria and emigrated to the U.S. 24 years ago. He had formal music training in the Damascus Academy of Music and went on to drum for a host of Arab music stars and famous bellydancers. He is also the only remaining disciple of the legendary Arab drum master Mahmood Salahadeen. In the U.S. he performed with Sting on the Grammy’s and with the BELLYDANCE SUPERSTARS in over 400 shows in 16 countries. Issam’s background, training and experience have made him in huge demand for drum tutorials and workshops. Call him the Wassan Pharaoun, King Of The Drum, or Mr. Magic Fingers and you only tell the half of it. It’s his connection to the dancer that is the essence of his magic.
Get to know your Middle Eastern Instruments (Formerly Beginner Drum)…Middle Eastern music creates mystery and movement through its many rhythmic instruments. Knowing your rhythmic instruments helps dancers center their movements towards the pulse of the duff, the shimmy of the riqq and the liveliness of the tabla. Learn how to listen for these instruments in various Middle Eastern music and to play them in order to better your dancing and be consistent musicians. Understanding the instruments makes Middle Eastern music less confusing and allows dancers and musicians to bring the richness of the music alive without being overwhelming. Learn basic technique and rhythms for the tabla drum, riqq (tambourine) and duff drum. Great for musicians and dancers.
Zill while you dance…where the musician and the movement meet…There are so many ways to play the finger cymbals – what is the right way for you? Learn the history of finger cymbals, different techniques and sounds to enhance your dancing. Gain insight on appropriate times to play the finger cymbals and when to pause, when to interact with the drummer and when to be the spot light. Practice techniques for incorporating zill playing into your dance. Ideal for dancers and musicians.
Taking your Tabla skills to the next level (Intermediate/Advance Drum)…Got tabla skills? Put them to work to create music! Learn new hand strokes for tabla players, new Middle Eastern rhythms, and techniques to creating a drum solo. Practice Issam’s approach to tabla artistry for consistent sounds, moving volume and intricate music. (Basic tabla skills required for this workshop)
TINA MARIE has danced for sixteen years, starting with classical Egyptian and then veering into other dance styles. Before moving to Winston-Salem, Tina danced and performed in Sacramento, California. Originally part of the troupe Unmata, she focuses on tribal fusion and ATS.
In the first half of the class we will have fun exploring basic tribal fusion technique. The second half of the class concentrates on layering these movements into tribal fusion combos. The class will focus on fusion with hula, modern dance, and hip-hop elements. Please come prepared to sweat!
ANI is an American Tribal Style (ATS ®) instructor in Boone and Asheville. After exploring different styles of bellydance, she finally found her true dance love at an ATS workshop in 2004. Ani earned her General Skills certificate and completed Teacher Training I and II. She says she will always love ATS because of the way it unites the dancers and showcases the strength, beauty, and power of women.
This class will be devoted to dancing successful ATS duets. Foundation steps and combos that are unique for duets will be covered and drilled. How do we handle the inevitable mistakes that can happen with confidence? Ani will share her own experience of what makes an impressive, on the spot duet performance.
AMARA is an Artistic Director, Choreographer, Concert Performer, Master Teacher, Designer, Workshop Teacher, Seminar Leader and Guest Lecturer of new and old world dances of the Middle East. She has been successfully producing educational dance workshops and dance programs for stage, fund-raisers, corporate functions, and cultural events in New York City, Long Island and now North Carolina.
Presenting…Egyptian Orientale Cabaret Shaaby from the Golden Era Workshop 2 Hours …featuring high energy stylistic and authentic Belly Dance choreography with combinations for adaptation to improvisation. We will include zils but not needed to learn this dance…feel like a star and dance with dynamic pizzazz. (Music and choreography notes available.)
